UN General Assembly declares Israeli occupation of Golan illegal

(MENAFN) The UN General Assembly on Tuesday approved a resolution asserting that Israel’s ongoing control and effective annexation of the Syrian Golan is "illegal" and reiterating the demand for a pullback to the June 4, 1967 line.

According to general accounts, the proposal—originally drafted by a member state—secured 123 votes in support, with seven countries opposed and 41 abstaining.

The measure states that Israel’s Dec. 14, 1981 decision to extend its laws and administrative authority over the occupied territory is "null and void and has no validity whatsoever."

It further "demands once more that Israel withdraw from all the occupied Syrian Golan to the line of 4 June 1967 in implementation of the relevant Security Council resolutions" and concludes that maintaining the occupation and the territory’s de facto annexation represents "a stumbling block in the way of achieving a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in the region."
