Israeli Forces Advance Beyond Litani River, Reach Nabatieh Outskirts

(MENAFN) Israeli military forces have advanced beyond the Litani River and pressed toward the outskirts of Nabatieh city in southern Lebanon, a senior Lebanese military source told media on Saturday — marking a significant escalation in the ongoing Israeli incursion despite a standing ceasefire.

The source confirmed the scope of the territorial push, identifying specific towns now under Israeli control.

"The Israeli forces have reached villages and towns north of the Litani River, including Zawtar al-Sharqiyah and Shqif Arnoun, and have reached the outskirts of the city of Nabatieh," the source said.

The advance was accompanied by intensified Israeli strikes and expanded incursions into additional southern villages and towns, the source added.

Faced with the accelerating offensive, the Lebanese army withdrew from affected positions to protect its personnel.

"The Lebanese army has evacuated its positions from villages and towns that have come under Israeli control" in order to ensure the safety of Lebanese soldiers, the source stated, noting that Israeli army attacks had caused casualties among Lebanese soldiers.

"There is no presence of the Lebanese army in areas where the occupation is present in southern Lebanon," the source added.

The source stressed that the Lebanese army's current priority is consolidating internal stability, and noted pointedly that the latest Israeli escalation preceded US-hosted military meetings with Israel held on Friday.

Israel has pressed ahead with its military campaign in Lebanon in open defiance of a ceasefire that took effect on April 17, subsequently extended for 45 days beginning May 17 following US-mediated indirect negotiations.

According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, Israeli strikes since March 2 have killed more than 3,350 people across the country.
